CONCORD – The Concord-Carlisle High School (CCHS) Black Student Union (BSU) recently hosted students from two area high schools for its annual student-led potluck, serving as a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the upcoming Black History Month.
On Thursday, Jan. 15, the Black Student Union hosted 45 students from CCHS, Wakefield Memorial High School and Acton-Boxborough Regional High School for its third annual potluck.
The evening promoted a sense of community for students as they shared a meal, competed in Kahoot! trivia about Black history and culture and created new friendships across neighboring school districts. Visiting students also got a tour of CCHS.
The Black Student Union hopes to continue expanding the potluck next year by inviting more local high schools to attend.
METCO Academic Liaison Chris Skinner and CCHS Math Teacher Mike Lonergan serve as the advisors.
“The Black Student Union at Concord-Carlisle High School plays an integral role by creating a meaningful space where students can connect and support each other,” Skinner said. “Events like our potluck allow students to share each of their unique experiences attending a predominantly white school, and learn more about Black history and culture.”
“We are proud to see our Black Student Union hosting students from neighboring districts, as well as their own peers,” Superintendent Dr. Laurie Hunter said. “Their commitment to inclusion and building community is inspiring, and I look forward to watching this event continue to grow in future years.”
