Alcott Elementary School Featured in GBH News Story About Blanding’s Turtle Conservation

Alcott Elementary School was recently featured in a GBH News story highlighting the role of our students in helping protect the endangered Blanding’s turtle.

The Zoo New England conservation program has helped the turtle population at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge grow over the past 22 years from around 55 adult turtles to around 300. As part of the program, Zoo New England brought hatchlings to about 40 elementary schools in Massachusetts, including Alcott Elementary School, where students helped raise the turtles before they were released into the wild.

The GBH story highlights one of those turtles named Small Fry, who was raised at the school 16 years ago. After being released into the wild, Small Fry grew into an adult and returned to Great Meadows this year to lay her own eggs.

Zoo New England recently visited Alcott to share Small Fry’s story with a new generation of students.

We’d like to give a special thank you to Zoo New England for this wonderful partnership with Alcott, and thank you to GBH for highlighting it.
